Todd Anthony Shaw, better known by the stage name Too Short, was born on April 28, 1966, in South Los Angeles, California, USA.

During his teenage years he was raised in East Oakland, California. Short produced custom raps in the early 1980s, for people with his high school friend, Freddy B.
