Etienne-Pierre Theodore Rousseau (1812-1867) was born in Paris, he came under the influence of the British landscape painters Constable and Bonington, sketched from nature in many parts of France, and settled in Barbizon in 1848. He painted oppressive, gloomy, Romantic landscapes.
