Tadeus Reichstein (1897-1996) had identified a large number of steroids secreted by the adrenal cortex, some of which would later be used in the treatment of Addison's disease in 1946.

Reichstein shared the 1950 Nobel Prize for Medicine with Edward Kendall and Philip Hench (1896-1965).
