Thomas Stamford Raffles (1781-1826) served in the East India Company, took part in the capture of Java from the Dutch in 1811, and while governor of Sumatra (1818-1823) was responsible for the acquisition and foundation of Singapore in 1819. He was a founder and first president of the Zoological Society, London.
