Saint Anthony (c. 251-356), also known as Anthony of Thebes, was founder of Christian monasticism.
Short Biography:
Born in Egypt, at the age of 20 he renounced all his possessions and lived in a tomb, and at 35 sought further solitude on a mountain in the desert.
In 305 Anthony founded the first cenobitic order, or community of Christians following a rule of life under a superior.
When he was about 100 he went to Alexandria and preached against the Arians (see Arius).
