Saint Alphege (954-1012) was an Anglo-Saxon priest, bishop of Winchester from 984, archbishop of Canterbury from 1006.

When the Danes attacked Canterbury he tried to protect the city, was thrown into prison, and, refusing to deliver the treasures of his cathedral, was stoned and beheaded at Greenwich on 19 April, his feast day.
