Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex (1566-1601) was a English soldier and politician. He fought in the Netherlands 1585-1586 and distinguished himself at the Battle of Zutphen.

Short Biography:

In 1586 he jointly commanded a force that seized and sacked Cadiz. He became a favourite with Elizabeth I from 1587, but was executed because of his policies in Ireland.
