Robert Burton (1577-1640) was a English philosopher, who wrote an analysis of depression, "Anatomy of Melancholy" in 1621, a compendium of information on the medical and religious opinions of the time, much used by later authors.
Born in Leicester, he was educated at Oxford, and remained there for the rest of his life as a fellow of Christ Church.
