Pius VII (1742-1823) concluded a concordat (agreement) with France 1801 and took part in Napoleon's coronation, but relations became strained.
Napoleon annexed the papal states, and Pius was imprisoned from 1809 to 1814. After his return to Rome in 1814 he revived the Jesuit order.
