Paracelsus adopted name of Theophrastus Bornbastus von Hohenheim (1493-1541) developed the idea that minerals and chemicals might have medical uses (iatrochemistry).
Short Biography:
He introduced the use of the opiate laudanum (which he named) for painkilling purposes. Although Paracelsus was some thing of a charlatan, and his books contain much mystical nonsense, his rejection of the ancients and insistence on the value of experimentation make him an important figure in early science.
