He directed Margin for Error mi, Laura (1944), The Moon is Blue (1953), The Man With the Golden Arm (1955), Anatomy of a Murder (1959), Shdoo! (1968), and Rosebud (1974).

His films are characterized by an intricate technique of story-telling, and a masterly use of the wide screen and the travelling camera.
