Pen name of Freiherr von Hardenburg (1772-1801) was a Pioneer German Romantic poet, who wrote Hymnen an die Nacht/Hymns to the Night in 1800, prompted by the death of his fiancee Sophie von Kuhn.
He left two unfinished romances, Die Lehrlinge zu Sais/The Novices of Sais and Heinrich von Ofterdingen.
