Mary Fairfax Somerville (1780-1872) was a Scottish scientific writer, who produced several widely used textbooks, despite having just one year of formal education.

Short Biography:

Somerville College, Oxford, is named after her. Her main works were Mechanism of the Heavens in 1831 (a translation of Laplace's treatise on celestial mechanics), On the Connexion of Physical Sciences in 1834, Physical Geography in 1848 and On Molecular and Microscopic Science in 1869.
