Makarios III (1913-1977) was a Cypriot politician, Greek Orthodox archbishop (1950-1977).
Short Biography:
A leader of the Resistance organization EOKA, he was exiled by the British to the Seychelles (1956-1957) for supporting armed action to achieve union with Greece (enosis).
He was president of the republic of Cyprus 1960-1977 (briefly deposed by a Greek military coup July-December 1974).
