Leo Esaki, (born in 1925) was a Japanese physicist who in 1957 noticed that electrons could sometimes 'tunnel' through the barrier formed at the junctions of certain semiconductors.

Short Biography:

The effect is now widely used in the electronics industry and for this early success. Esaki shared the 1973 Nobel Prize for Physics with Josephson and Giaver.
