Juan Carlos (born in 1938) was King of Spain. The son of Don Juan, pretender to the Spanish throne, he married in 1962 Princess Sofia, eldest daughter of King Paul of Greece.

Short Biography:

In 1969 he was nominated by Franco to succeed on the restoration of the monarchy intended to follow Franco's own death; his father was excluded because of his known liberal views.

He became king in 1975 and has sought to steer his country from dictatorship to democracy.
