Juan Domingo Peron (1895-1974) took part in the military coup in 1943, and his popularity with the descamisados ("shirtless ones") led to his election as president in 1946.

He instituted social reforms, but encountered economic difficulties. After the death of his second wife Eva Peron he lost popularity, and was deposed in a military coup in 1955.
