Joseph Franz or Joseph Francis (1830-1916) was the Emperor of Austria-Hungary from 1848, when his uncle, Ferdinand I, abdicated.
Short Biography:
After the suppression of the 1848 revolution, Franz Joseph tried to establish an absolute monarchy, but had to grant Austria a parliamentary constitution in 1861, and Hungary equality with Austria in 1867.
He was defeated in the Italian War in 1859 and the Prussian War in 1866.
