John William Mauchly (1907-1980) constructed in 1946 the first general purpose computer, the ENIAC, in collaboration with John Eckert.

Short Biography:

Their company was bought by Remington Rand 1950, and they built the Univac 1 computer in 1951 for the US census.

The idea for ENIAC grew out of the pair's work in World War II on ways of automating the calculation of artillery firing tables for the US Army.
