John Martin (1789-1854) was a British Romantic painter of grandiose landscapes and ambitious religious subjects, such as Belshazzar's Feast (several versions).

Short Biography:

Other examples are The Great Day of His Wrath and The Plains of Heaven (both Tate GaUery, London). Martin often worked on large canvases, and made mezzotints from his work, which were hugely popular in the early 19th century.
