Jennie Lee, Baroness Lee (1904-1988) was on its National Executive Committee (1958-1970) and was minister of education (1967-1970), during which time she was responsible for founding the Open University in 1969.

She became a member of Parliament for the Independent Labour Party at the age of 24, and in 1934 married Aneurin Bevan.
