Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) was a Discourses on the Origins of Inequality in 1754 made him famous, denouncing civilized society and postulating the paradox of the superiority of the "noble savage".

The Social Contract in 1762 emphasized the rights of the people over those of government, and stated that a government could be legitimately overthrown if it failed to express the general will of the people.
