James Augustus Henry Murray (1837-1915) was the first editor of the Oxford English Dictionary (originally the New English Dictionary) from 1878 until his death; the first volume was puhlishcd 1884.

He edited more than half the dictionary himself, working in a shed (nicknamed the Scriptorium) in his back garden.
