John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973) was a English writer, who created the fictional world of Middle Earth in The Hobbit in 1937 and the trilogy The Lord of the Rings 1954-1955, fantasy novels peopled with hobbits, dwarves, and strange magical creatures.

His work became a cult in the 1960s and had many imitations. He was professor of Anglo-Saxon 1925-45, and Merton professor of English at Oxford, 1945-1959.
