Ivan Sergeievich Turgenev (1818-1883) was a Russian writer, noted for poetic realism, pessimism, and skill at characterization. His works include the play A Month in the Country in 1849, and the novels A Nest of Gentlefolk (1858), Fathers and Sons (1862), and Virgin Soil (1877). His series of A Sportsman's Sketches (1852) criticized serfdom.
