Sir Ian Murray McKellen was born on 25 May 1939, in Burnley, Lancashire, England. He is and English actor.

McKellen was born shortly before the outbreak of World War II, and spent most of his early life in Wigan. He is the son of Denis Murray McKellen, a civil engineer, and Margery Lois. His mother died when he was 12, and his father died when he was 24. McKellen attended Bolton School at the boys division.
