Iain Ellis Hamilton (1922-2000) intensely emotional and harmonically rich, his works include striking viola and cello sonatas, a ballet (Clerk Saunders in 1951), the operas Pharsalia in 1968 and The Royal Hunt of the Sun (1967-1969), which renounced melody for inventive chordal formations, and symphonies.
