Hu Yaobang (1915-1989) was a Chinese politician, Communist Party (CCP) chair (1981-1987). A protege of the communist leader Deng Xiaoping, Hu presided over a radical overhaul of the party structure and personnel (1982-1986).

Hu, bon into a peasant family in Hunan province, joined the Red Army at the age of 14 and was a political commissar during die (1934-1936) Long March.
