Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882) was an Italian soldier who played an important role in the unification of Italy by conquering Sicily and Naples in 1860.

Short Biography:

From 1834 a member of the nationalist Mazzini's Young Italy society, he was forced into exile until 1848 and again 184918-54. He fought against Austria 1848-1849, 1859, and 1866, and led two unsuccessful expeditions to liberate Rome from papal rule in 1862 and 1867.
