George Stephenson (1781-1848) was a English engineer who built the first successful steam locomotive, and who also invented a safety lamp in 1815.
Short Biography:
He was appointed engineer of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, the world's first public railway, in 1821, and of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1826. In 1829 he won a £500 prize with his locomotive, Rocket.
