George Jeffreys , 1st Baron (1648-1689) was a British judge, born in Denbighshire, Scotland, he became Chief Justice of the King's Bench in 1683, and presided over many political trials, notably those of Sidney, Oates, and Baxter, becoming notorious for his brutality.
Short Biography:
In 1685 he was made a peer and Lord Chancellor and, afterMonmouth's rebellion, conducted the "bloody assizes" during which 320 rebels were executed and hundreds more flogged, imprisoned or transported.
