Georg Ferdinand Ludwig Phillip Cantor (1845-1918) was a German mathematician, born in Russia.

Why is Georg Cantor famous?

He developed a rigorous and consistent theory of infinite numbers ("transfinite" in his terminology), strongly opposed by Leopold Kronecker (1823-1891).

This was part of a broader theory of sets, which has permeated most of modern mathematics. He taught at the University of Halle, Germany 1869-1905.
