Edward Whymper, (1840-1911) made the first ascent of many Alpine peaks, including the Matterhorn in 1865, and in the Andes scaled Chimborazo and other mountains.

He wrote Scrambles amongst the Alps in 1871 and Zermatt and the Matterhorn in 1897.
