Edmund Anthony Cutlar Purdom was born on 19 December 1926 in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England. He graduated at St. Augustine's Abbey School, Ramsgate, and after that the Jesuits at St. Ignatius Grammar School and Welwyn Garden City Grammar School.
