Assumed name of Claus Detlef Sierck (1900-1987) studied in Germany but left 1937 because of the Nazi regime, and eventually went to Hollywood.

During the 1950s he made a series of lurid melodramas about capitalist USA which have subsequently been highly praised by critics; they include All that Heaven Allows in 1956 and Written on the Wind in 1957.
