Cicely Saunders (1918-2005) was founder of the modern hospice movement, which aims to provide a caring and comfortable environment in which people with terminal illnesses can die.
She was the medical director of St. Christopher's Hospice in Sydenham, South London, 1967-85, and later became its chair. She wrote Care of the Dying 1960.
