Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564) great innovations were to perform postmortem dissections, and to make use of illustrations in teaching anatomy.

These enabled him to discover that Galen's system of medicine was based on fundamental anatomical errors.

Vesalius' book De Humani Corporis Fdbrica/On The Structure of the Human Body in 1543, published in the same year as Copernicus' De revolutionibus, marked the dawn of the modern scientific era.
