Alessandro Volta (1745-1827) invented the voltaic pile (the first battery), the electrophorus (an early electrostatic generator), and an electroscope (for detecting electric charge).
Born in Como, he was a professor there and at Pavia. The unit of potential difference, the volt, is named after him.
