Aleksandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn (1918-2008) was a Soviet novelist and a US citizen from 1974.

Short Biography:

After military service, he was in prison and exile 1945-1957 for anti-Stalinist comments. Much of his writing is semi-autobiographical and highly critical of the system; for example, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich in 1962 deals with the labour camps under Stalin, and The Gulag Archipelago in 1973 is an expos of the whole Soviet camp network.
