Alec Guinness (1914-2000) many stage roles include Shakespeare's Hamlet 1938 and Lawrence of Arabia (in Ross 1960).

Short Biography:

In 1979 he gained a "lifetime achievement" Academy Award (films include Kind Hearts and Coronets 1949, The Bridge on the River Kwai 1957, and Star Wars 1977).

Guinness joined the Old Vic in 1936. He appeared in the television adaptations of John Le Carre's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy in 1979 and Smiley's People in 1981.
