Henri Philippe Petain (1856-1951) defence of Verdun in 1916 during World War I made him a national hero.

Short Biography:

In World War II he became prime minister in June 1940 and signed an armistice with Germany. Removing the seat of government to Vichy, he established an authoritarian regime. He was imprisoned after the war.

In 1917 Petain was created French commander in chief, although he became subordinate to Marshal Foch in 1918. He suppressed a rebellion in Morocco (1925-1926).
