John Major (born in 1943) was foreign secretary in 1989 and chancellor of the Exchequer (1989-1990).
Short Biography:
His initial positive approach to European Community (EC) matters was hindered from 1991 by divisions within the Conservative Party. Despite continuing public dissatisfaction with the poll tax, the National Health Service, and the recession, Major was returned to power in the April 1992 general election.
