John Hersche Glenn (born in 1921) was an American astronaut and politician.

Short Biography:

On 20 February 1962, he became the first American to orbit the Earth, three times in the Mercury spacecraft Friendship 7, in a flight lasting 4 hr 55 min.

After retiring from NASA, he became a senator for Ohio in 1974 and 1980, and unsuccessfully sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984.
