James Leonard Callaghan (1912-2005) was a British Labour politician.

Short Biography:

As chancellor of the Exchequer 1964-1967, he introduced corporation and capital gains tax, and resigned following devaluation. He was home secretary 1967-1970 and prime minister 1976-1979 in a period of increasing economic stress.

As foreign secretary in 1974 Callaghan renegotiated Britain's membership of the European Community.
