Hermann Hesse (1877-1962) was a German writer who became a Swiss citizen in 1923.

Short Biography:

A conscientious objector in World War I and a pacifist opponent of Hitier, he published short stories, poetry, and novels, including Peter Camenzind (1904), Siddhartha (1922), and Steppenwotf (1927).

Later works, such as Das Glasperlenspiel / The Glass Bead Game (1943), tend towards the mystical. He won a Nobel prize in 1946.
