Helmut Schmidt (born in 1918) is a German socialist politician, member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), chancellor 1974-1983.

Short Biography:

As chancellor, Schmidt introduced social reforms and continued Willy Brandt's policy of Ostpolitik. With the French president Giscard d'Estaing, Schmjdt introduced annual world and European economic summits. He was a firm supporter of NATO and of the deployment of US nuclear missiles in West Germany during the early 1980s.
