Augusto Jose Ramon Pinochet Ugarte (1915-2006) was a Military ruler of Chile from 1973, when a CIA-backed coup ousted and killed president Salvador Allende.

Short Biography:

Pinochet took over the presidency and ruled ruthlessly, crushing all opposition. He was voted out of power when general elections were held in 1989 but remains head of the armed forces until 1997.
