Alexander Mackendrick (1912-1993) was an American-born Scottish director, responsible for some of Ealing Studios' finest comedies, including Whisky Galore in 1949 and The Man in the White Suit in 1951.
He later made several films in the US, notably Sweet Smell of Success in 1957, before becoming a film lecturer.
