Alexander Fleming (1881-1955) was a Scottish bacteriologist who discovered lysozyme (a nasal enzyme with antibacterial properties) in 1922, and in 1928 the antibiotic drug penicillin.
Short Biography:
With H. W. Florey and E. B. Chain, he won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1945.
After a false start as a shipping clerk, Fleming retrained in medicine. Lysozyme was an early discovery.
