Twirling round for too long causes the liquid in the semicircular canals to swirl around too. When you stop the liquid keeps on swirling round, confusing the brain and making you dizzy.
If you watch a dancer spin round, you will see their head does not move continuously, but remains still then jerks round and stops again as their body turns. This reduces the swirling effect.
Astronauts have to cope with the dizzy effects caused by the movement of liquid through their balance mechanism.
